Born with a cleft lip and palate so severe her parents were told she would not survive, pre-med and VES concentrator Elaine Dong wants to give children with congenital birth defects the same chance to achieve their full potential.⠀

When Elaine entered Harvard College, she initially intended to concentrate in the sciences. Yet given her extensive involvement with and passion for art, she ultimately decided to concentrate in visual and environmental studies. She has a particular interest in the artistic expression of the human body and has contributed to many artworks displayed in Mather, including various oil paintings and also a documentary on plastic surgery in Korea. Outside of the classroom, Elaine has engaged in research with a group of plastic surgeons at Children's Hospital and was president of the Global Smile Foundation. She will be attending medical school next year with the intent of becoming a plastic surgeon. She is pictured here in the Carpenter Center at Harvard University.⠀
