LA REINA DE 5 DE MAYO: When Lila Cisneros-Wise first answered the call to raise money for Ballet Folklorico she was not thinking of personal gain, or crowns, or candy, or piñatas. 

She just wanted to help out a good cause.

“I really like charity work,” she said. “I do a lot for AVID, and Señora A was like, ‘We are raising charity for Ballet Folklorico, and I was like, ‘I love Ballet Folklorico, so I’ll raise money for it,’ so I did.”

She wasn’t expecting to be named royalty for her efforts; in fact, she still doesn’t even know how much money she raised. She just raised the money and handed it over.

What was her secret for effective fundraising?

“I would just go to each class, and then I would say, ‘I have an announcement,’ and then I’d say, “Hey, does anyone have any coins or dollar bills that they want to donate to ballet folklorico?’ and then they’d say, ‘Yes’ or ‘No.’ or ‘Whatever.’”

Her royal announcement came as a complete shocker.

“When I got on stage, they were like so blah-blah wins for duchess, and this person wins for princess, and I was like, ‘Did they just bring me up here to show that everyone else won something and I didn’t?’ because I didn’t think that I was going to win, but then I did, so here I am.”

Here by the way is Sra A’s classroom last Friday during second period when Cisneros-Wise and her classmates earned a piñata party for her fundraising prowess.

The best part of being queen?

“The crown,” she said immediately and then after the briefest of pauses, “and the candy and piñata.”
