Join us in welcoming and saying hiii 👋 to Zebv Diez whitegoldhoops one of the Centre[3] x Sari-Sari Xchange artists-in-residence!

For this residency, Zebv is creating a new animated work which will be presented at the sarisarixchange symposium this fall at reelasian and exhibited this winter at Centre[3].

“My animation is a way for me to ask questions like, Can we reinvent the notion of artifacts? What do immigrants of this generation value and what is sought after to be passed down with later generations? How do we turn the mundane into something of value? By reframing the perspective of minorities as the center point of focus, can we disrupt western consumerism, only valuing an object when it is a means of use? How do we find value in the mundane? Is something only valuable when it serves a purpose?”

Zebv Diez is a Filipino Canadian Toronto-based digital artist, animator and painter. Currently studying at ocaduniversity in animation and digital painting, his body of work explores the intricate relationships of identity and navigating predominant western spaces as an Asian Minority. Born in the Philippines, he uses his experiences as an immigrant to produce idealized spaces to portray the experiences of marginalized bodies and the second-generation Asian diaspora. The work relies heavily on Asian aesthetics within a high-gloss 3D environment to convey the struggles of generational trauma, fetishization, assimilation and the othering of ethnic bodies.

The sarisarixchange is an emergent media based collaboration driven by artists, researchers, and cultural leaders from the Asian diasporic community. 

SSX is a partnership project between centre3_, tangled_arts, reelasian, mcmasteru and yorkuniversity
