Let me start by saying this is NOT an ad. 2 years ago, right when #BareFeetDNA started airing on PBS, I started experiencing foot pain. I think it was my body trying to tell me to slow down - I mean, my show is called Bare Feet, it wasn’t a coincidence.

I kept dancing, and I pushed through it, preparing for a 12-episode Season 4. But my feet, specifically my right foot, was getting worse. At that point, I could no longer walk. By Christmas, I felt the fascia in my right foot tear and unravel in excruciating pain. I was devastated - I could barely walk, let alone dance. For a while, I thought I would never dance again. But with the momentum of Season 4, funding, pre-production, & sponsorship demands, I knew I couldn’t stop.

Then came March 2020. It literally took a global pandemic to give myself the permission to slow down. I went from someone who made it her job to dance with strangers to someone who was immobile and winced at the thought of the pain dancing would bring me.

I started taking ballet classes over zoom with my lifelong teacher dieter_riesle – his classes gave me so much joy, but wearing ballet slippers didn’t give my feet any support – I was feeling hopeless. The thing I loved to do the most brought me the most physical pain.

I remembered Dieter always wore jazz sneakers when teaching, so I thought maybe they would work for me. I immediately ordered a pair of capezio Rock It Dansneakers, and I used them for my next virtual ballet class…the pain that would usually come during or after the class wasn’t there! I started taking more virtual dance classes, including Contemporary with michaelleont through the aileyextension – I was dancing again!

Now, here we are, 2 years later from a time where I thought I would never dance again to filming our FINAL segment of Season 5 with Michael Thomas IN-PERSON at the Ailey Extension!
I am so grateful for my recovery journey – Season 5 truly feels like a miracle on so many levels!  And without capezio and my dance teachers, friends, family, & fans, I would have never been able to get to this point. Thank you!
