This Friday marks the celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year, ringing in the Year of The Ox. I have always been in love with Manhattan’s Chinatown, so much so that when I decided to start filming #BareFeetNYC, our season premiere took place in my favorite downtown neighborhood.  From making music with the Mencius Youth Chinese Orchestra to Tai Chi in Columbus Park to shopping at the New York Mart on Mott Street and visiting the Eastern States Buddhist Temple with Karlin Chan to learning the sacred lion dance for the annual parade with ny.chinesefreemasons , #Chinatown and its people are a beautiful and integral part of this city and our county.

Unfortunately, the rise in hate crimes towards Asian-Americans and Asian communities around the world have skyrocketed since COVID-19, a symptom of the ignorance and racism that our past administration falsely spewed.  And on top of that, it has received little to no attention in the media.

The Year of the Ox brings us diligence, persistence, and honesty - something we need more than ever.  This is my love for Manhattan’s Chinatown, for its people who shared with me why this neighborhood is so special, and for all of our Chinese-American and Asian-American brothers and sisters.
