This is an incredible book that speaks to me specifically in terms of the trials and tribunals growing up mixed race in England
I’m mixed race, London born and bred, working class, raised by grandparents aunties and uncles all first generation Caribbean.

Growing up I would watch these same people, drinking Clark’s court (rum), tell hilarious tales of life back home many of which would end in someone getting licks with a belt, pot spoon or any other weapon that was close to hand 😂. I would spend entire summer holidays back in Grenada where my grandmother aka head of the house hailed from. I loved every minute of my time there, even wished I lived there and although i shared a commonality of colour and culture with the people of Grenada I knew I was different and if I wasn’t sure of it the nickname of English boy that they gave me made that very clear 😂

I always used to tell my friends growing up I’m not British because I knew that same colour and culture was not of this land, of that I was very aware. My uncle would give me books to read of African American hero’s and heroines, the likes of Fredrick Douglas and Harriet Tubman and as incredible as their stories were hearing them still didn’t give me a sense of belonging.
In a binary world hell bent on putting you in a box you can lose your sense of self simply trying to fit it.
I know who I am I know where I’m from. I’m from royalty ,African Kings and Queens I was born a mulatto melanated third generation Caribbean Londoner an experience unique and unlike no other.
I say all this to say next time the consensus comes round I’m ticking other.
