Fifty years ago On This Day, in only his second F1 start, rising star Roger Williamson perished in a disgracefully preventable incident at the Dutch Grand Prix. Failed by the complacent belief that Zandvoort was a "safe" circuit, Williamson crashed and became trapped in his upturned, burning March; despite the heroic efforts of fellow driver David Purley, marshals were not equipped to extinguish or approach the car to right it. The race was not stopped, and Williamson was not saved.
