I’ve been working on a project for the mjfbrewdistill for the past few months. At the beginning of the new year I was asked if I could take on the task of creating a mentorship program for the foundation. How could I say no?

At the same time, I’VE NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE and my fellow board members were patiently waiting for a follow up as the months passed us by. But make no mistake, they were always there when I needed their help.

igarrettoliver then connected me with the MBAA who had much interest in assisting with the launch of our pilot program by setting me up with some amazing mentors. We’re talking Goliath-type mentors in the industry who would greatly benefit our prospective mentees in many ways.

Before bringing them on, I had a virtual meet and greet with them first. There I was, a Lead Brewer who’s only been in this industry for eight years, asking some of the greats who have been doing this for 25+ years, “So tell me why you would like to be a part of our mentorship program.” Oof.🫠

Through all the check-ins and emails and phone calls and updates, I managed to find myself at the end of our six week trial run.

Three mentors.
Three mentees.
Six weeks.
The goal: Set them up for success and support them every step of the way.

So much work went into this mentorship and it all started from an uncertainty that I chose to not let consume me. Why? Because the board and Garrett were counting on me, but most of all, because they believed I could and had my back through it all.

What’s next? Well, now I assess and fine tune the program for the next round of applicants. This will take some time, but I’m better prepared and forever grateful for the opportunity to be challenged and see it through.
