I finally met someone who I’ve been following on the gram for a cool minute. She’s the photographer who took a pic for a deck that still hangs on my wall. I love it. I always will.

She’s a talented curator of photography, and a culturalist who’s done breathtaking work for playboy and who has now found herself working for jumpman23 continuing to grow rapidly in her career. She’s also a woman of color.

She invited me to a roof top party in the city to celebrate her birthday. My first social event outside of the beer industry was finally happening. What in the hell do I wear?!

As I scanned the room we finally locked eyes, smiled, and walked towards each other. Because we were all there to celebrate her, the greeting was cut short and she was whisked away by the next group of arrivals.

I sat in the corner and watched the room for a bit. I didn’t know a soul. Well, that didn’t last long. The more I kept talking to people I learned that they played major roles in fashion, music, marketing, global editorials and so on. I felt like a fish out of water.

What I am failing to mention was that even though their industries had nothing to do with mine, what we shared was the fact that we were all POC who were not only successful, but also dominating in industries where the odds have always been stacked against us. So yes, a fish out of water, but I was growing legs.

I was learning how to stand in a room alongside those whose voices and stories were just powerful as mine. If not more. We were the majority. That shit was dope.

Before leaving I gave adriennelives a big hug and thanked her for the invite. I told her how much I love her work and appreciate how much she’s done for WOC ensuring we are given the representation we deserve.

This post has nothing to do with craft beer, but it has everything to do with being seen and being represented. Well, now that I’m thinking about it, this post has everything to do with craft beer. Don’t you agree?
