Those who can, do; those who can’t, teach.

I remember walking on the brew floor for the first time and being so damn green. Not knowing how to properly secure a tri-clamp, or build a CIP loop, or what valve to open or close. I remember being so new to everything. I remember being excited and nervous at the same time. I remember all of it. I also remember there only being one of me. Me.🤷🏽‍♀️

Welp, it’s my turn to teach now and I get to teach someone who started out like I did: washing kegs. Our intern is now in the next phase of her journey in brewing and I get to take part in her growth.

Sofia is young, smart, driven and curious about everything. What’s great about this training is that we speak Spanglish to each other in order to explain what we mean when we’re discussing something she’s learning at the moment.

There’s a comfort in being able to relate to each other because of our gender and our culture. I feel empowered being able to empower her to speak up about anything she feels unsure about or needs help in.

For those of you still wondering why hire another woman/ non-binary person of color if you already have one on staff, well what you see here is the result of diversity and inclusion.

She doesn’t feel like the only one, because she sees someone like her doing what she is currently in the process of becoming one day.

And that is the result of representation.

Ooo! Ooo! And I’d also like to add, this is what happens when you place women/non-binary people of color in leadership roles. It’s a cause and effect kind of thing that can benefit the industry on many levels.
