Rolls-Royce has been developing a Space Micro-Reactor, backed so far by $3.7 million in funding from the UK Space Agency.

The Micro-Reactor is designed to provide power for a future lunar base to support human habitation and exploration on the Moon. It would serve as a self-contained, power-dense solution capable of continuous generation regardless of location or environmental conditions like sunlight.

Rolls-Royce is working with several partners including the University of Oxford, Bangor University, and BWXT to make the project a reality. The project aims to develop space nuclear power technology, specifically focusing on fission nuclear systems for space power missions. These space microreactors are designed to provide a sustainable and resilient power source for various space applications, including communications, life-support systems, and scientific experiments.

In addition to powering a lunar base, the lightweight 1-10 MWe Micro-Reactor could also enable spacecraft propulsion. Rolls-Royce aims to create a world-leading nuclear power and propulsion capability that supports net zero emissions goals.

The UK government highlights this as an innovative technology that can create skilled jobs in the UK space economy. Rolls-Royce plans to have a reactor ready to send to the Moon by the early 2030s to enable continuous human presence there.

In addition to the Micro-Reactor, the UK Space Agency announced $64 million for UK companies to develop lunar communications and navigation services as part of the European Space Agency's Moonlight program.
