It's Wattage Wednesday and the energy is electric around Copenhagen Atomics' small but mighty reactor design!

Denmark's Copenhagen Atomics hopes to revolutionize nuclear with their innovative "Onion Core" reactor. Leveraging a decade of R&D, they've developed unique tech like corrosion-resistant salt purification and highly efficient thorium fuel breeding.

The compact 100 MWt reactor uses a clever "onion" geometry with a thorium blanket surrounding the core, minimizing neutron leakage to just 2% vs 50%+ in some fast reactors. A heavy water moderator and molten fluoride salt loops enable a flexible, inherently safe unpressurized design.

Mass manufacturing is key - Copenhagen Atomics plans to build one reactor per day on assembly lines, deploying a 1 GW plant in 18 months initially, then 6 months as production scales! Non-radioactive prototypes are already being tested, with a 1 MW demo slated for 2026. Commercial rollout is targeted for the early 2030s.

By selling heat and power directly to industrial customers with no upfront cost, Copenhagen Atomics projects undercutting all other energy sources at <$40/MWh. A subsidiary, UK Atomics, has applied for regulatory assessment in Britain.
