Plug into the power of Wattage Wednesday.

The Westinghouse Lead Fast Reactor (LFR) is a new type of nuclear power plant that uses molten lead as the coolant instead of water. This gives it some unique advantages:

Safety - The LFR has "walk-away" safety capabilities, meaning it can safely shut itself down and cool down on its own in an emergency situation without operator intervention.

Versatility - In addition to generating electricity, the LFR can also be used for producing hydrogen, desalinating water, and providing heat for industrial processes.

Small Size - The LFR has a compact design that does not require being located near a large water source like a lake or river. It can be air-cooled instead.
Fuel Flexibility - The LFR can use a variety of nuclear fuel types, including reprocessed used fuel, which reduces nuclear waste.

Westinghouse designed the LFR to complement their traditional water-cooled nuclear reactors. The LFR provides enhanced capabilities, inherent safety features, and siting flexibility while aiming to be economically competitive. Westinghouse is actively developing and testing this innovative lead-cooled reactor technology.

Ansaldo Nucleare and Westinghouse have completed initial testing for their Generation IV lead-cooled fast reactor design at the Passive Heat Removal Facility in Wolverhampton, UK. This testing is part of a broader effort by the two companies to jointly develop lead-cooled fast reactor technology globally, with a focus on key European countries like the UK, Romania, and Belgium.
