The AP300 - Fun size fission!

The newest SMR on the block is based on the Westinghouse AP-1000 - the same technology that's been lighting up China and Georgia, and that Poland is planning on building multiples of.

The AP300 boasts extensively tested passive safety systems and a fail-safe design, while offering versatility in applications ranging from clean grid power to renewable-heavy grid stabilization, district heating, desalination, and hydrogen production.

Recent developments showcase the AP300's progress. Westinghouse signed an agreement with the UK's Community Nuclear Power to deploy a four-unit AP300 fleet in Northeast England, demonstrating growing interest in the SMR's potential.

 In the U.S., Westinghouse submitted a Regulatory Engagement Plan to the NRC, outlining the path towards design certification, which they aim to achieve by 2027.
Westinghouse's experience with the AP1000 in China and the U.S. could help streamline the design and licensing process for the AP300, potentially enabling faster NRC approval.
