As we celebrate today’s feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola, here is a look at our new statue of St. Ignatius, located in front of the Blue Doors. 

The statue is a gift of the Class of 1973, which chose to dedicate its Golden Jubilee 50th Reunion Class Gift towards a statue of St. Ignatius, the founder of the Society of Jesus. The class exceeded its goal in raising more than $90,000 for its Class Gift. 

The statue is a physical reminder for everyone who spends time on campus of our call to be Men and Women For and With Others, and to Pursue Excellence in our daily lives.

St. Ignatius of Loyola sought the greater glory of God in all things, a mission that is at the heart of Jesuit education. 

Soon after the foundation of the Society of Jesus, it became clear to Ignatius that schools offered the greatest possible service to the church – by moral and religious instruction, by making devotional life accessible to the young and by teaching the Gospel message of service to others. Many schools began to be founded, the start of what is today a global network of Jesuit institutions. 

His feast day marks the day of his passing on July 31, 1556. He is the patron saint of education, retreats, soldiers and the Society of Jesus. 

A special Mass and dedication of the statue will take place next month at the CHS Chapel of the Sacred Heart.
