The other day when my husband was at home he witnessed a chain of events. I had a call with a client scheduled so I was finishing off some work prior to that. The door bell rang. It was the gardener for his weekly visit. At the same time, the cook asked for something and we realised we were running out of groceries. The meal plan for the coming week was still not done. The grocery list was hence still unfinished. I made a mental note of also adding the cats’ food to the list. Hang on - cat food! Ah it was time to feed the cats. 

In my head, I had 654 tabs open, which is mostly the case at all times. 

And then it was time for the work call, so off I went. 

By the time, I was done with the call, husband had fed the cats, made the meal plan and the grocery list for the week, and had also prepared the breakfast. 

When someone asks me how much has life changed after getting married, I get quite excited to answer tbh (2-year anniversary coming soon 👀). There’s just so much to say. 

Managing a household is intense. We’re privileged to be able to have hired help take care of a lot of these chores. But the mental load that goes into the planning, and the conception and the execution of all the tasks cannot be underestimated. And Hansal gets it. Not only does he take time to acknowledge and appreciate this invisible labour, he tries to share the burden as much as he possibly can. 

We still keep falling into some gendered traps and it’s all a work in progress. But then we talk about it and I see how actively he focuses on kicking away the stereotypes. In many ways, life is just managing one chore after the other. But with him it’s all just so much more meaningful, I suppose. :*
