Indigenous rights groups are alarmed by the recent footage of members of the Mashco Piro tribe, the largest known uncontacted tribe in the world, captured in the Peruvian Amazon.

“These incredible images show that very large numbers of uncontacted Mashco Piro people are living just a few miles from where loggers are supposed to start operations… This is a humanitarian disaster in the making,” warned Caroline Pearce, director of Survival International.

The Peruvian government has prohibited contact with the Mashco Piro tribe to prevent disease transmission to which they have no immunity. Additionally, in 2002, the government established the Madre de Dios Territorial Reserve to safeguard the tribe’s territory. However, much of their land lies outside this reserve. Despite this, the government has sold extensive areas of the surrounding land as logging concessions, allowing companies to cut down evergreen forests for timber and other resources.

The Mashco Piro tribe has historically been forcibly displaced from their land, enslaved, and massacred. As the tribe’s population now nears 750, their survival depends on the government, logging companies, and tourists upholding their land rights.
