dstfarwestregion “My hair journey has been a painful one and a joyous one. I had always had issues with my hair. Thin, shedding, baby fine; I couldn’t find a style that was just mine. I used to get teased about my hair constantly. “A is for apple, J is for Jack; look at that girl with no hair in the back.” I am 56, and that rhyme still hurts me every time. I tried everything. When I was in school, I spent all day at the hair stylist for a trim and a press and curl. I was a teen in the 80s, and of course, I had a Jheri Curl! The oil grew my hair long and silky, just to fall out all over again. I wore braids for a long time. Then a perm. Then a long hair weave. I was constantly attracting men then! But I didn’t feel like myself; I wasn’t my true self. My confidence was at an all-time low. I knew right then that the perms, the hot combs, and the Saturday trips to the salon had to go. So, I made the commitment, I took the leap; to do what was best for me to be. To go all natural. My true self. I never felt so confident, so beautiful, and so free. As my gray starts to show and alopecia invades my space, I still wear my crown with glory. Proud to be me, standing with power, love, and with grace.” - Gena Davis
