Ever since I set my academic path out as a Christian Studies major, I have grown to appreciate my faith's traditions, cultures, and people exponentially. At the same time, being a college student develops your skills in terms of living independently and appreciating a plethora of cultures outside the one you are used to. Knowing that Germany's culture--let alone language and cuisine--is different than in America, I educated myself by continuing to learn how to have conversations in German, being receptive to different types of food and customs, and being aware of important pieces of history.

International travel is a privilege and an opportunity that should not be pushed aside when offered. Even alongside fellow traveling companions, one truly experiences a bigger world when stepping beyond our nation's borders. I can attest that navigating through a European city is rather different than navigating through an American city! Plus, people will know you are considerate of their culture when you take part in it--especially when you're in a small town and can communicate with locals in the native tongue.

As Germany was a major hotspot for the Protestant Reformation in the 15th and 16th centuries, I learned so much about Christian history and scholarship during my journey. From the stories behind the towering cathedrals to the footsteps of Martin Luther, to how the Church was able to combat the efforts of the National Socialists during the 1930s and 40s, I learned that global Christian cultures extend far beyond what one can learn in the United States. And for that, I hold my faith ever so close to my heart.
