Kayla Dunn, BA ’20/MA ’21
Member and Event Associate at Professional Women in Construction NY

Kayla’s responsibilities include helping plan and execute events for their 600+ members. PWC hosts about four panels and three major fundraisers a year with four committees that host their own events and it’s her responsibility to help them in certain areas of the planning process. She also runs the organization’s social media platforms such as Instagram, LinkedIn, and their weekly newsletter as well as being in charge of their scholarship program and internship program.

Kayla found this job through a referral. Her cousin brought to her attention that they were looking for someone for the position.

Favorite memory from La Salle?
“I feel like I can’t pick just one. A lot of my favorite memories involve different organizations. The food truck event is one of my favorites because at the time, my best friend Ariande Cortez was the president of resident life and I would help her whenever I could. I loved being an RA and all the different times I got to bond with my residents.”

Valuable lesson learned?
“It sounds cliche but networking is very important. These days it is about who you know. Something that I learned from my job is that you must be comfortable with being uncomfortable. I am more comfortable with speaking with strangers and getting to know them now. Although most people I talk to are in the AEC industry, it’s still a chance for me to learn what opportunities are available. I have been able to use my knowledge to help other people.”

Advice for Students?
“Give yourself more grace and be your biggest cheerleader/advocate. I think sometimes we get frustrated with the grades we get or flustered over minor inconveniences. It’s so easy to beat yourself up over things and you must remind yourself that you did the best that you could. You will realize later on that some of the things you got upset over were not a big deal. I also recommend staying connected with the people that have been a part of your journey.”
