On this day in 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law, dismantling legal barriers that had denied African Americans their constitutional right to vote. This landmark legislation enforced the 15th Amendment, banning literacy tests, empowering the Attorney General to investigate poll taxes, and making voter harassment punishable by fines and prison. Federal examiners were also appointed to register voters in underrepresented areas. Thanks to the sacrifices of countless men and women, over a quarter-million African Americans were registered to vote by the end of 1965. We honor their legacy and remain committed to ensuring equal voter access for all. . . . . #youthvote #genzvotes #votingrights #votingrightsact
