DEVILS WIN!!!! Kyle Palmieri blasts home an overtime winner as the Devils win a wild one in Montreal. The Devils played their best game of the season by far, overmatching a Canadiens team that was 11-6-2 at the start of play. They outshot the opposition 43-34, and kept giveaways at a minimum (4 compared to MTL’s 17). The Devils were relentless and finally their efforts showed. After falling behind 1-0, the third line put together a tremendous shift, as Nikita Gusev netted his 5th of the season. That goal was scored with 17 seconds left. Later on in the second, the Devils couldn’t capitalize on their chances and fell behind 3-1. The Devils responded once again by generating an odd man rush and scoring a shorthanded goal with 1.8 seconds remaining - this time Nico Hischier. The Devils had a great push in the third but couldn’t come up with anything - until a beautiful Taylor Hall feed found the stick of Wayne Simmonds, who scored another powerplay goal with about five to play. The Devils nearly lost the game as the Canadiens seemed to have taken the lead with 48 seconds to go, but it was overturned and ruled ‘no goal’ as the puck was knocked into the net with a distinct kicking motion. Overtime began, the Devils won the draw and immediately Taylor Hall used his speed to draw a penalty. They went on the powerplay, maintained the offensive zone well, and got the game winner past former Devil Keith Kinkaid. There was a standout factor that made the Devils look *that* much better tonight. Who, you may ask? Nikita Gusev. After doing so poorly on the defensive side of the puck early this season, Gusev had a +0.72 xGA. Every single game he had played this season had been negative or slightly past zero (0.10ish)...thanks to the ramped up defensive work Hynes felt comfortable not sheltering him late in the game. He had six shots on goal and spent over fifteen minutes on the ice, both season highs. This game truly showed what Nikita Gusev can do to this team. His efforts were further rewarded by being selected as second star of the game. Last but not least, Mackenzie Blackwood was solid yet again in net. He made the big stops when needed. Let’s go, baby!! #NJDvsMTL 😈
