Western Connecticut State University Athletic Director Lori Mazza has announced the hiring of Doug Friedman as head coach of the Men’s Ice Hockey program, set to begin varsity play in the fall of 2025.

Friedman, a native of Cape Elizabeth, ME, was a four-year player at Boston University from 1990-1994 where he amassed 104 points with 43 goals & 61 assists in 149 games. He served as team captain his senior year. The Terriers were two-time Hockey East champions, two-time Beanpot winners and advanced to the #NCAA Division I Frozen Four three times in Friedman’s time. They appeared in the National Championship twice as Friedman earned New England Collegiate Defensive Player of the Year as a senior.

Drafted by the Quebec Nordiques in the 1991 #NHL Draft at 222nd overall (11th round), Friedman would play 18 total games getting one assist between time with the Edmonton Oilers and Nashville Predators. He enjoyed seven years in professional hockey between the #NHL, #AHL and #IHL, winning a Calder Cup in 1997 with the Hershey Bears (AHL) while serving as assistant captain.

Friedman coached youth hockey while working in the hockey business for 10 years before taking the role of coaching director with the Portland Jr. Pirates from 2011-2014. He served as head coach with Kents Hill School (ME) from 2014-2018 before taking over the Twin City Thunder (MN) of the #USPHL & #NCDC for two seasons.

He was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 2016.
