McAteer a 2003 graduate at Minnesota-Duluth, was a member of the Bulldogs’ three-peat #NCAA Division I National Championship teams in 2001, 2002 & 2003. In four seasons, McAteer played in 136 games tallying 35 goals and 32 assists for 67 total points. She served as assistant captain her junior and senior seasons while being a part of the UMD women‘s ice hockey inaugural class.

After her collegiate playing career, McAteer stayed with UMD as a graduate assistant coach for two seasons. She then became an assistant coach at Harvard from 2005-2007 before becoming an assistant coach with the Vaughan Flames in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL). She returned to UMD as an assistant coach in 2008 for two seasons, winning another national title in 2010.

McAteer took over the Auggies bench for the 2010-2011 season, becoming just the second head coach in the program history after Jill Pohtilla, who coached the first 15 seasons. She holds a career record of 166-142-35 over her tenure with the Auggies for a .535 winning percentage. Her teams were 115-90-27 (.554) in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (#MIAC) play. The Auggies reached the conference playoffs the last eight full seasons, reaching the playoff championship game three times.

Under McAteer’s helm, the team earned 109 All-MIAC honors, nine College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors, two CSC Academic All-America honors, three MIAC Elite 22 honors and 85 #AHCA All-American Scholar honors. Three Auggies earned the MIAC’s Sheila Brown Award as the conference’s outstanding senior women’s hockey student-athlete.

In addition to her coaching duties, McAteer also taught in the communications and general studies department, and was the advisor for the Auggie Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
