Following their successful mission to the lunar surface, the Apollo 11 astronauts were celebrated by nearly four million people in a ticker tape parade in New York City on Aug. 13, 1969. The same day, they were feted in another ticker tape parade in Chicago, followed by a dinner in Los Angeles with President Nixon.⁣
