In the middle of May, 2024, after three stormy weeks camped on the Kahiltna Glacier and three more on the Buckskin before that, codywinckler and I launched up the last remaining major unclimbed panel of the North Buttress of Hunter. Two weeks earlier we’d attempted the same line, linking neve streaks, ice-spattered dihedrals, and wild traverses around bulging snow mushrooms to reach the top of the beautiful triangular wall and the junction with the French Route, where a storm forced us down. This time, we knew the way and the forecast was on our side, and 39 hours of continuous climbing later we reached the top of the North Buttress with the weather deteriorating around us. Our aspirations for the true summit blew away with the wind, and phantom planes buzzed in our minds as we rappelled through the growing storm. As the 48th hour came to a close, we crossed the bergschrund and stumbled back to our skis. Whether a new route, a variation, or an attempt, we decided to call the line “In the Shadow of the Wall”, M7 AI6 1200m.

Now, three months after our time in Alaska, Cody and I are on our way to the far north of Pakistan. With augustfranzen, we hope to attempt an unclimbed peak in a forgotten fold of the Karakoram near the border with Afghanistan. We aren’t sure what we’ll find, but such is the essence of adventure.
