'Name all the presidents in order.' 'How many bubbles in a bar of soap?'

These weren't trivia questions - they were literacy tests used to stop Black Americans from voting.

Literacy tests were a tool of voter suppression from the 1890s to 1960s. They claimed to test voters' knowledge, but were really designed to be impossible to pass.
White registrars could fail Black voters for any reason, while most white voters were exempt.

This unjust practice was finally outlawed by the Voting Rights Act of 1965. But voter suppression continues today in new forms.

Know your voting rights. Make your voice heard.
