After a promising summer which saw the varsity football team qualify for the state 7-on-7 tournament and then advance to the knockout round, the Knights kicked off the 2024 fall season with the annual Blue-Gray scrimmage on Saturday Aug. 10 on the McCallum practice field.

Head coach Thomas Gammerdinger gave his team an incomplete grade but a mostly positive assessment following its performance.

“First of all, we got out healthy so that’s a positive,” he said. “I saw some good and some bad but that is to be expected so early in the season. Now that we are through the acclimation period and can wear full pads, the point of emphasis is going to be on improving tackling and getting more physical.”

When asked to identify what he meant by “some good,” Coach G said. “The passing game and quarterback looked good.”

The strength of those components of the offense harkens back to the team’s work in the spring and summer on 7-on-7 football, a format that enables offensive units to focus almost entirely on passing and developing a quarterback’s relationship with his receivers.

“I think we grew closer as a team and also gained confidence in ourselves [while] competing in 7-on-7,” starting quarterback and senior Luke Dunham said. “I think the confidence will translate to our new district. We won’t back down to the tougher opponents in our district.”

The team had the first of two scrimmages this past Saturday on the road against the New Braunfels Long Creek Dragons. We will have a report on how that went on this feed soon.
