Before we kick start the semester, let's explore another #SummerCamels series. This time, we spotlight Ashley Norton for her work with WakeMed.

Throughout my time at Campbell, I have taken various courses that prepared me for this experience. Putting those courses into a real-world perspective provided me with a different understanding of a Hospital at an operational level.

My internship allowed me to meet, learn, and shadow various individuals who are on the management side of healthcare. For example, I was connected with a practice manager who provided me with insight into her day-to-day operations. She showed me various sides of operations from physician relations, and productivity, to budgets.

Throughout this experience, I grew my professional and personal skills. For example, I covered 43 areas within WakeMed Health and Hospitals organization which allowed me to find areas where I could potentially pursue a career upon graduation. I have always doubted that I should be taking a clinical route, but after shadowing a few clinical levels from an operational standpoint I quickly realized that was not for me.

I would tell students to not be afraid to sign up and show up for these clinics. The clinic needs help from everyone from taking vitals to interpreting for patients. There is also room for you to shadow if you would like to do that! Get your foot in door and I promise you will not regret it! There is medical students, physician assistant students, pharmacy students, and amazing providers/attendings that will answer all your questions and doubts!
