STORY TIME: Retinal Detachment and Lattice Degeneration. I didn’t talk about this at all, but only posted a small video on TikTok- ever since then I’ve received several messages of people going through this.

Retinal detachment is where the retina, the thin layer of tissue at the back of the eye responsible for processing light, pulls away. Retina senses light and send signals to the brain, allowing you to see. When it detaches, it separates from the layer of blood vessels that provides it with oxygen.

Lattice degeneration affects the peripheral retina, the part of the retina located toward the edges of the eye. With this, the retina becomes thinned crossed blood vessels which led to a number of retinal holes and tears for me.

Back in December, I was diagnosed with Retinal Detachment and Lattice Degeneration from my retina specialist. This is a rare diagnosis. I was about 4-5 weeks away from going blind in my left eye. Day after the National Championship, I was scheduled for vitreoretinal surgery. My eye was opened up, I had a few different surgical procedures & cryotherapy done to repair my holes and tears. My RS placed a gas bubble in my eye to hold the retina in place. Gas bubble lived in my eye for almost 80 days which was really hard. I now have a scleral buckle in my eye for the rest of my life. This buckle will hold my retina in place. Wore my eye patch for 5 months, even went to work wearing it. 😅 However, I wasn’t healing as expected so in April I went in for another laser procedure to seal eye tissue and prevent excess fluid from entering my vision. Surgery recovery was a really challenging time, I couldn’t see for almost two months, only if I had my left eye closed and covered I had vision. I was in a face down position 24/7 for a month, wasn’t allowed to be on my back, wash my hair, nothing. It’s taken me 7 months to finally be at 100%. While I have to be 10x more careful with my head, I’m grateful to have my vision. This disease isn’t something that’s talked about or hardly known, but I am ready to talk about it now 🤍
