Jack Benz ’24 is headed nearly 8,000 miles away, to an island in the Pacific Ocean, for a semester of service through the Society of Jesus and CHS Campus Ministry. 

“Canisius has raised me in Campus Ministry, and raised me to be a man of service,” Benz said. 

Benz leaves Saturday for Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia, a country spread across the western Pacific Ocean comprising more than 600 islands. Chuuk is the largest state in Micronesia, and is home to Xavier High School, a co-ed Jesuit school where Benz will serve. 

“Campus Ministry has been such a big thing I've been involved in at Canisius, and it's kind of conditioned me to do something like this,” Benz said. “I feel like I'm prepared. I’m excited to do things with the Jesuits. 

“I think it'll be a great experience. It's an opportunity that I felt I had to take.”

A special missioning ceremony was held for Benz during Sunday evening’s Mass at the Christ the King Chapel at Canisius University. The Mass was celebrated by University Chaplain Fr. Fred Betti, S.J. 

The idea of the year of service was presented to Benz in his senior year during discussions with Director of Campus Ministry Fr. Chuck Frederico, S.J. Frederico, CHS President Fr. David Ciancimino, S.J. and Assistant to the President Fr. Richard Zanoni, S.J. participated in the ceremony as well. 

Jack is the son of Doug Benz ’96 and brother of Charlie ’25 and Fred ’27.
