Each day, the peace of our skies is shattered by a devastating thud. A bird collides with glass—its fragile bones break, and it suffers head trauma. Many of these casualties go unnoticed, and until recently, the true scale of this crisis was grossly underestimated.

Enter Dr. Daniel Klem, Jr. For over 50 years, Dr. Klem has been at the forefront of research, revealing the staggering impact of clear and reflective glass on bird populations. His work has shown that the danger is even greater than we once believed, with up to 3.46 billion birds lost annually in the U.S. alone (with a possible range as high as 5.19 billion).

Dr. Klem’s work has challenged our understanding of this invisible killer and pushed the boundaries of bird conservation. In a powerful guest post with the Wilson Ornithological Society, he talks about the true lethality of these collisions: https://wilsonsociety.org/2024/07/15/guest-post-what-happens-when-birds-hit-windows/

In recognition of his groundbreaking contributions, Dr. Klem has been selected to receive the Pennsylvania Audubon Council’s “Walt Pomeroy Conservation Award,” which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to conservation in Pennsylvania.

Dr Klem’s research continues to shape conservation efforts and emphasizes that prevention must be our top priority. His insights have inspired many in the conservation community, including us, to take meaningful steps toward safeguarding birds. We offer scientifically proven solutions that significantly reduce collision risks (up to 95%, according to this PeerJ study: https://peerj.com/articles/7620/).

We congratulate Dr Klem and stand with him in this critical mission to raise awareness and protect our avian populations.

For those interested in learning more about Dr Klem's groundbreaking research, check out his book Solid Air: Invisible Killer - Saving Billions of Birds from Windows. This is a comprehensive guide to understanding and combating this urgent issue.
