Bryce Lundberg can’t sleep. He’s been thinking about one thing all summer: rice. Okay, and maybe turkey feathers. Here’s why 👇

In our Regenerative Organic Certified® fields, we drown and dry up weeds instead of dousing our fields with chemical herbicides. Just after planting, we raise the water level *just* high enough to drown the grass weeds, but not so high that it harms the rice. This requires careful and, sometimes, near-constant observation as rice can only survive under water for about 48 hours longer than grass weeds. That’s our window to make sure the rice survives while the grass weeds drown.

But here’s the thing: Aquatic weeds LOVE water. So, once the grass weeds drown, it’s time to switch it up like Nintendo. 🎮

Dry up is a system Bryce’s dad and uncles discovered as they prepared to give up on a field that had been overrun with aquatic weeds. “Let’s see how long we can let the rice dry up,” they said. They returned the water to rivers and streams and watched as the aquatic weeds shriveled in the sun, loosening their grip on the growing rice. Then, they rehydrated the fields *just* in time to bring the rice back to life. Decades later, it’s our best defense against aquatic weeds—no chemicals needed! Plus, it can help reduce global warming potential by 49%. 🌎

Using water to kill weeds instead of spraying our fields with chemicals might require us to spend more time on the farm, but it also helps us care for the ecosystem in and around our rice fields. And, most importantly, it gives us more time to collect turkey feathers! Win-win 🪶
