KICKOFF AT CHAPARRAL: This morning the cross country team kicked off their season taking on the Westlake Chaparral Invitational. The invitational is one of the biggest meets this season, drawing in teams from all over the state. Varsity teams ran a 5K while JV runners raced on a 2-mile course.

While every new season brings change along with it, the cross country team has new coaches for the second year in a row. Jennifer Warren, Special Education department chair, and counselor Nicollete Muller are coaching the team this year after several years of coaching transitions since longtime coach Susan Ashton retired in 2021.

Upperclassmen, including junior Julia Lentz, have been running through change. This meet, Lentz led the girls’ varsity team with a time of 22:57, finishing first for McCallum and 107th out of 182 runners overall.

“It was hard. The course was not the best, it was really humid, but it was a good start to the season and everyone is going to improve from here,” Lentz said.

Junior Waylon DeAtley placed first for McCallum for boys’ varsity, beating his teammates by over a minute. His time of 18:42 put him in 124th out of 245 runners.

“It was hot, but overall we did pretty good for the first race of the season,” DeAtley said. “I think it’s a good starting place. If we work on pacing, by the end of the season, we will be a lot faster.”

Class of 2024 alum David Herring ran at last year’s state-level meet, and DeAtley said he is expecting similar success for the boys team this season.

“We just miss David [Herring], but we have really good freshmen, so I think we’re going to make regionals and maybe even do better than last year,” DeAtley said.

Top Mac finishers for the JV 2-miler were freshman Daisy Masters for the girls’ team with a time of 16:49, coming in 166th place out of 315, and freshman Donovan Walsh for the boys’ team with a time of 13:03, coming in 108th place out of 383 runners.

The Knights race again next Friday morning at the Pro Fit Invitational in Temple.
