Police from Torquay, Lorne, Anglesea and Winchelsea often encounter international visitors - and for good reason. One of Australia's top tourist attractions - the Great Ocean Road - runs right through the Surf Coast, keeping local police on their toes.⁣
⁣
For most tourists, the scenic views and windy roads are a must see, with many visitors jumping at the opportunity to hire a car and head out as soon as they land down under. Luckily for our members, the Great Ocean Road is one of the few places where there are arrows to indicate which side of the road you need to be on.⁣
⁣
Senior Sergeant Adrian Bickley said, “we recognise a lot of people might be from a country where they drive on the opposite side of the road. Hopefully this simple road marking will help reduce road trauma.”⁣
⁣
But it’s not only road trauma our officers are combating down on the coast.⁣
⁣
Leading Senior Constable Steve Wrigley is one of the many officers assisting our younger generation during their school leaver celebrations.⁣
⁣
The simple act of dropping by at the start of their celebration week allows members to introduce themselves, set some standards, and remind party goers they can call on them if they need any help.⁣
⁣
“We just want to make sure they are safe. Hopefully they take that onboard as they enter adulthood and think, ‘The police aren’t too bad. They’re just like us. They’re just people wearing uniforms’”.⁣
⁣
From Schoolies period to peak tourist season, Surf Coast members know their interactions with people enjoying a holiday or a music festival are chances to create positive connections.⁣
⁣
The growth both in locals and tourists has meant a growth in demand for police in the area. As a result, the Surf Coast will be getting one of the biggest influxes of additional police in the state, which is a huge win for our local officers and Adrian.⁣

“It means we can be more proactive, adaptive and evolve to respond effectively to meet community needs and expectations.”⁣
