Gina-Marie Principe has been an NYRR member since 2022. That year she ran the #TCSNYCMarathon for Michael’s Cause, an organization that raises awareness for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a genetic disorder that causes progressive muscle degeneration and weakness.
 
“As a local Staten Islander, I was aware of Michael and his family through their efforts with Michael’s Cause. I learned that a young man from our community was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in November 2010.”
 
Michael’s Cause directs funding to medical and scientific research to help find better treatments and a future cure for the disease.
 
“Participating in the marathon allowed me to contribute to this vital effort and stand in solidarity with those facing significant physical challenges. The incredible family behind Michael’s Cause is a cornerstone of the Staten Island community, and this is our way of giving back and supporting their extraordinary efforts.”
 
Gina-Marie trains with Team G, a local run club in Staten Island, where she says they support each other in reaching their running goals.🤝
 
“Many of us are special educators and our students are often curious about our training. This allows us to teach them about long-term goals, grit, and hard work.”
 
She said her son and her students are her biggest inspirations and that she wants to show them that anyone can take on new challenges—even running 26.2 miles.
 
“Being a member of NYRR has been a rewarding experience. I cherish being part of a community of like-minded individuals who share similar long-term goals.”
