The freshman football team, like their varsity counterpart, has been up and rolling, practicing every morning and afternoon to prepare for the upcoming season. 

The ninth-grade Knights lost their first game last night against the Anderson Trojans, 36-6. While it was not the Anderson game everyone attends, it marked the start of the season, a big and challenging moment for the team.

“The game went well,” freshman Vance Reinig said. “Our team was nervous at the beginning, but then we saw that they were just people like us, which helped me and my pals focus on the game.” 

Before the game, Reinig and teammate Kevin Gallas were excited and pumped to start the season. 

“The season has had a lot of ups and downs,” Reinig said, “but I have a lot of fun playing with my friends every day.”

Conditioning and practice in the morning, and film or more practice after school, the football players on all teams have a lot of practicing to do each day. For Gallas, the conditioning is the hardest part. 

“We have to do a lot of weightlifting and conditioning to prepare, which is hard,” he said, “but the hard work pays off.” 

While the payoff for the hard work in practice may come down the road, the outcome of Wednesday’s game, Reining said, was disappointing and surprising.

“I believed we would win, but was severely mistaken,” he said. “They came out looking like they would beat our varsity.” 

While the freshmen team ended up losing, Reinig found reasons to be positive. 

“The highlight of the game was when Mason [White] threw a 65-yard touchdown pass to Silas [Alexander],” he said. “We all ran down the field celebrating with him and congratulating him.”
