Last night was intense, wonderfully eye opening, and immensely special. The Sleep Out for Covenant House isn’t about pretending to be homeless. It’s about gathering to hear the stories of these young people and witnessing the work of the Cov staff members. It’s about giving up the comfort of your bed for one night in solidarity with homeless & sexually trafficked youth in order to say “we see you.” 

The sleep out experience can bring up so many emotions. This was my 6th year sleeping out and while progress has been made, I’m angered that youth homelessness is still so rampant. It makes me examine the systems that allow this to persist and find ways to turn that anger into action- big or small. But it also makes me feel hopeful that there’s an organization going above and beyond doing this work to ensure young people facing homelessness have the tools and support to rebuild their lives. Covenant House helps them build their skills, find their passion and find employment so that they can provide themselves with the stability of a home. Most importantly I see these young people blossom with confidence and courage, and in todays world that is everything.
