If you know me well…you’d know I LOVE food…but you’d also know that food and I have a weird relationship and I’m pretty open when talking about it…

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been in a toxic relationship with food-especially during my days as a pro athlete. But, I’ve been trying to make some small, healthy, and intentional changes to my mindset and eating habits to help with my eating disorder. Here are 3 things I remind myself daily:

1. Female Athletes All Come in Different Sizes:
Female athletes have diverse body types, and success in sports isn’t tied to a specific size. Embracing this diversity can reduce pressure to conform to an ideal and promote a healthier body image.

2. Food is a Love Language—Food is Fuel for Your Body:
See food as nourishment that supports your health and performance, not as a source of guilt. Viewing food as fuel helps prioritize your body’s needs and promotes a positive relationship with eating.

3. Letting Go of Control—Body Changes Over Time Are Natural: Accept that your body will change naturally over your life. Letting go of strict control over your body’s appearance helps reduce anxiety and supports a focus on overall health and well-being.

In today’s society, social media often bombards us with unrealistic body image standards and associated shame, which can negatively impact self-esteem and body perception. It’s especially important for young women and girls to focus on properly fueling their bodies, as athleticism and strength come in various forms and sizes. Recognizing that athletes exist across a spectrum of body types helps to foster a healthier, more inclusive approach to physical well-being and self-acceptance, challenging narrow beauty ideals and promoting overall health.
