Meet Osbelkis Perez '18, an assistant solicitor for the Fifth Judicial Circuit Solicitor's Office.

UofSCLaw: Do you own any items that represent or remind you of your Hispanic/Latinx culture?

Osbelkis Perez: I am Dominican, from the Dominican Republic. Being Dominican is a huge part of my identity. The food I cook, the music I blast in my car and house, the way I speak (my accent) are all full-blown Dominican, and I love it. I am proud to be Dominican and privileged to represent my people every day. I chose my flag and a shirt as my items to showcase. The shirt symbolizes the different aspects of my culture (food, language, music, character) and the flag is a badge of honor.

UofSCLaw: Why do you think it's important to dedicate a month to celebrating Hispanic/Latinx culture and heritage?

OP: It is essential to celebrate Latinx culture and heritage because it is a part of the fabric of America. The incredible melting pot of cultures that is the United States includes Latinx people from many different countries.

UofSCLaw: Why's it necessary to have Hispanic/Latinx representation in the legal field?

OP: It is necessary to have Hispanic/Latinx representation in the legal field because when we turn on our TVs, the lawyers we see don't look like us. But we are out here, working hard, making a difference. It's important that youth and future lawyers see that it's possible.

UofSCLaw: Is there a Hispanic/Latinx lawyer that you look up to? If yes, please explain why.

OP: THE Sonia Sotomayor, Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Talk about an inspiration! A Latina from the Bronx, nominated by President Barack Obama—representing Latinas in THE highest court in the nation! Need I say more?
