The city of Berkeley could decide to sweep unhoused encampments without offering alternative housing in an upcoming Berkeley City Council meeting Sept. 10.

The proposal, authored by District 1 Councilmember Rashi Kesarwani, states that the city will attempt to provide interim housing when it can but will no longer require it when clearing encampments, as a result of the Supreme Court decision in the case City of Grants Pass v. Johnson.

The Grants Pass decision allows for cities to penalize unhoused people for camping and public sleeping without being required to provide any form of shelter.
