Imagine tiny, iridescent jewels gliding through the sky, embarking on one of nature’s most extraordinary journeys. Hummingbirds are among the earliest migrants to take flight each year. As summer wanes, they start their epic trek long before many other birds, setting off to avoid the coming chill and find the warmth of their wintering grounds.

In North America, we have 23 species of hummingbirds, most of which are migratory.

The Rufous Hummingbird, a champion of endurance, covers an astounding 3,000 miles from its breeding grounds in Alaska to its winter retreat in Mexico. Other migratory species, like the Ruby-throated Hummingbird, also embark on long journeys. Some species, such as the Anna's Hummingbird, remain in their range year-round, particularly in milder climates.

To prepare for their demanding journeys, migratory hummingbirds increase their body weight, sometimes doubling it, by consuming large amounts of nectar and insects, which provides the energy needed for their long flights. They can cover up to 500 miles in a single day, depending on conditions and their specific needs.

Despite their remarkable resilience, their migration isn’t without peril. Collisions with glass windows are a hidden danger that poses a significant threat. To help protect these delicate travellers, consider adding bird-friendly markers to your windows and turning off unnecessary lights at night.
