The Berkeley City Council approved a proposal that would allow the city to close unhoused encampments without offering interim housing in a meeting Tuesday.

The proposal comes after Gov. Gavin Newsom’s executive order to crack down on encampments following the U.S. Supreme Court’s City of Grants Pass v. Johnson ruling in June, which allows for cities to penalize unhoused people for public camping and sleeping, even if the city does not offer shelter.
