In January and February, officials with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources culled 170 elk on the Deseret Cooperative Wildlife Management Unit, which lies within the Morgan-South Rich Hunting Unit and is owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The DWR says this was necessary due to an overpopulation of elk in the area, but the agency had previously tried to keep the operation a secret.⁠
