Eight months after giving birth to my daughter, I was shocked to hear my doctor say “Your cholesterol is over 300!”. I was healthy—or so I thought. As a Registered Dietitian, I was following all the “”good”” advice: I had lost the baby weight, I was eating a low-fat, low-calorie diet, and I worked out regularly. But my cholesterol told a different story.

It turns out, high cholesterol can affect anyone, even healthy people but making small changes to your diet can make a big difference! Here are some easy food swaps you can add in your routine to help keep your cholesterol levels in check:

Swap #1: Limit Processed Foods

Processed foods are often loaded with unhealthy fats, added sugars, and sodium. Opt for whole, unprocessed foods whenever possible.

Swap #2: Saturated Fat for Unsaturated Fat

Ditch the butter and choose olive oil, avocado oil, or nut butter instead. These healthy fats can actually help lower your LDL (“”bad””) cholesterol and raise your HDL (“”good””) cholesterol.

Swap #3: Whole Grains Over Refined Grains

Swap out white bread, pasta, and rice for whole-wheat or brown rice options. Whole grains are packed with fiber, which helps reduce cholesterol absorption in your gut.

Swap #4: Lean Protein for Fatty Protein

Instead of fried chicken or marbled steaks, choose leaner protein sources like grilled chicken or fish, lentils, or beans. These options are lower in saturated fat and can help keep your cholesterol in check.

Swap #5: Snack Smarter

Skip the chips and cookies, and reach for healthy snacks like fruits, nuts, seeds, or yogurt. These options are low in saturated fat and high in nutrients that can benefit your heart health.
