Does your training reinforce practice execution or game execution?

During team practices, it is easy to fall into bad habits and delay development of footwork and tracking habits due to the nature of flow drills. Here, 2008 prospect and centericeadvisory client alexkim.08 tracks this wide shot all the way in and all the way out, which allows him to easily get in position for the shot off the missed attempt. A couple of simple pointers to make sure you keep your game habits sharp during team practices:

• “3 starting points of success”: one tenet our coaches like to reinforce with our goaltenders is the concept of these three points of tracking: see the puck from point of release, to point of impact, and point of destination. During flow drills, it may be impractical to recover or follow your rebound/shot that goes wide. However, on a wide shot, tracking it all the way off the stick blade and seeing where it strikes the boards will keep your visual skills sharp and keep you sharp and getting in position for the next play.

• Work on your “controlled fade”: it is easy during warm-up flow drills to come out and get your feet set because you know a shot is going to be released. If possible, treat each rep like a line rush, establish an appropriate depth , and work on a slight fade back. This will help you with your depth management, maintaining, composed feet, and being able to execute a balanced save under game situation.

• Take pride in controlling shots, not just “getting hit with the puck”: trusting your vision and being patient, you will find that where your eyes go, many times your bodyweight will go. Just the ever so slight shift into a shot many times will allow you to possess the puck or direct the puck into an area that is away from secondary threats. Remember, your job is to control shots, not just block them.

Put yourself under pressure during practice to be able to perform under pressure in the game.
