Nazareth’s only men’s ice hockey head coach in program history, George Roll, has announced that the 2024-2025 season will be his last.

A career that has spanned 37 seasons, Roll has taken on 28 years of that career as a head coach. James McDonald, a 2020 graduate of Nazareth, will be his replacement after a stellar playing career and being Roll’s assistant for the past four seasons.

Roll took over the Golden Flyers men’s ice hockey program in 2012-2013 with the challenge of building it from the ground up. In 12 seasons, he’s compiled a record of 110-161-32 (.363) with his first win coming on October 18, 2012, against Geneseo for a 3-2 OT victory.

The Golden Flyers had their best season under Roll in 2022-2023 when they finished with a 18-8-2 record, 14-5-1 in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (#UCHC). They earned the 2-seed in the UCHC playoffs only to fall to 1-seed Utica in the finals.

Roll, a Blue Island, IL native, is a Bowling Green State University graduate and four-year player for the Falcons from 1981-1985. He played 161 career games racking up 62 goals and 90 assists for 152 points, averaging just under a point per game.

He began as a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater in 1987-1988 before shifting for the same role the following season at Clarkson University. He then became an assistant coach with the Golden Knights from 1989-1996. Roll’s first head coaching gig came at Oswego State in 1996-1997 where he accumulated a 119-77-17 record (.586) over seven seasons. Roll would then return to Clarkson as men’s head coach for eight years (2003-2011) before beginning the program at Nazareth.

In his time at Nazareth, Roll has coached two #AHCA All-Americans in Henry McKinney (2022-2023) and Dominik Gabaj (2016-2017), who was also named #ECAC West Player of the Year.

As for Roll’s replacement, McDonald was a four-year standout for the Golden Flyers, serving as team captain his senior season in 2019-2020. A native of Potsdam, NY, McDonald put up 58 points (35G / 23A) in 105 career games.
