READY FOR A GLOBAL EXPERIENCE

It has always been the dream of sophomore and integrated marketing communication major Emma Crouch to study abroad in college. Emma, along with two other students, is embarking on a study abroad trip to Dublin, Ireland for the spring semester. These three will be the first students at Winthrop to go abroad since the pandemic hit.

It just made sense to Emma to choose IMC as her major because she gets to explore both advertising and marketing while still experiencing the mass communication and journalism side of things. “Marketing and selling things have been what I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid. I just wanted to get people to buy things” she added.  She’s excited to continue learning more about IMC when she goes to Dublin where she’ll be continuing her education at Dublin Business School. 

Reflecting on Winthrop’s study abroad program, Emma said: “part of my reasoning for coming to Winthrop was because I found out about its program in Dublin, so I decided I really wanted to come here”. Emma has many family ties to Ireland. Her mother’s grandparents were Irish immigrants and her father’s grandparents were first-generation Irish Americans, so visiting the country that holds so much family history has always been a dream for her. 

While going to Ireland is an exciting new venture, travel during the age of COVID-19 has proven very challenging. “I don’t think I have ever been more nervous to go abroad than I have because of COVID,” said Emma. In preparation for going to Dublin, she has been researching the COVID rates in the city, what the legal requirements are, and the precautions she will have to take before even boarding the plane. She has also made an emergency COVID plan in case something was to happen while she was abroad. 

Although the pandemic makes studying abroad more nerve-wracking, Emma is really looking forward to the cultural immersion once she gets there. She's excited to experience and explore the city and all it has to offer even as she furthers her IMC education!
