CAMI AND CALISTA’S INTERNSHIP STORY

THEY SET OUT FOR DUBLIN.
AND ENDED UP IN ALASKA.

“You’re a South Carolina student and you’re getting ready to study abroad. Your friends and family ask you where you’re going. Your plans have shifted in the last two years because of a global pandemic so you could not go to your first choice. You smile and say “I’m going to Alaska”.

Camryn Godbold (Cami) and Calista Anderson don’t have to imagine that scenario because they are already living it. Cami is studying mass communication while Calista studies IMC. The two Winthrop University Seniors are currently at the University of Alaska Fairbanks completing their study abroad semester.

Why Alaska? The same reason why almost every plan has been altered for the past year and a half: COVID.

“I am in Alaska right now by the grace of God, my Lord,” says Cami, “me and my roommate have been trying to study abroad for three years now. We were going to go to Ireland, but obviously COVID hit the end of our sophomore year. So we were supposed to go during fall of junior year and that got canceled and then it got canceled again and then it got canceled again”.

After three years, these roommates finally got the chance to travel and continue their studies elsewhere even if it wasn’t exactly what they imagined it would be.

“We’re just thankful that we got to study away anywhere,” says Calista.

The two will return at the end of the calendar year to complete their last semester as students in Rock Hill.

“I am looking forward to being back on campus when that ultimately happens.” says Calista.

The girls express their love for their small school in South Carolina.

“I thought it was beautiful and that was the only school that I ended up applying to at all. So, glad that worked out for me”. Cami says with a laugh. She said that from her first visit here, Winthrop felt safe. It was her number one choice and she knew Winthrop was the only place she wanted to go.

Calista shared almost the same sentiment.

“Honestly, [Winthrop] was the first school that I found that I felt comfortable at. I just thought that the campus was beautiful and I thought that it was the perfect size the more that I got to meet other students and meet faculty and get to know the community a little better”.

Calista chose IMC as her major because as a rising freshman she was interested in social media. She still has that same interest today as she would like to become a social media coordinator or a marketing professional.

“I did have a little experience doing that. When I was in high school I used to work at a zoo and I ran social media for them. … I also worked for a haunted house and ran their Instagram and Facebook,” she explains.

Cami had a past interest in PR, but after spending a bit of time in the program she decided that publishing is really what she wants to do.

“I really think I chose a good spot and [the faculty] are very helpful. They really try to help you with anything you need and they’re there for you if you have any issues or questions”. she says.

Cami explains that the reason why she and Calista were even presented with the opportunity to study abroad is because they had the instructors to talk to during their time here as well as the structure of the mass communication classes.

“Mass communication really does allow you to be more creative with your work... there is a lot of freedom in the department and it lets you be more creative with your work”.

Cami has big dreams of working in a large publishing company in New York one day or getting into social media.

Calista says her plans involve moving to Charleston in the near future and working for a company there as the social media coordinator.

“I would also really like to get a dog, so that’s something”!
