Meet Chance, a three-year-old who has Sickle Cell Disease. Recently, he completed a series of Transcranial Doppler ultrasounds as part of his treatments in Children’s Radiology. Chance asked that we take his picture with the sensory fish tank and the prize chest.

Our Light Tower is going to be turning PINK tonight in recognition of #SickleCellAwarenessMonth! Did you know? Sickle Cell is a genetic blood disorder where abnormal C shaped blood cells are formed and can clump together causing pain crisis, stroke and organ damage.

As part of treatment for pediatric sickle cell, patients receive annual ultrasounds to assess blood flow in the brain as sickle cell puts patients are at a higher risk for having a stroke. Medication, blood exchange transfusions and blood transfusions are given to help prevent strokes and pain crises. At times, pain crises can be so painful, patients must be admitted for pain management.
